Metro Service and the Metro

20+ years of operating the Metro

Metro Service has been responsible for the daily operation of the driverless Copenhagen Metro for more than 20 years. This includes the 30,000 daily departures and the 300,000 daily passengers.

The stewards are present among the passengers in the metro. They help and guide passengers to a great, safe travelling experience, and they're able to drive the driverless metro trains manually, if needed.

Metro Service's technicians maintain and prepare all metro trains in our two large train workshops located close to our offices in Copenhagen. Here you also find the joint administration and control rooms, where we keep an eye on the driverless trains travelling around the system. Together we ensure that the Metro runs on time on more than 99% of the year's 11 million departures.

The M1/M2 lines

M1 and M2 were the first two metro lines in Copenhagen. They opened in 2002 with the first leg going from Frederiksberg to Lergravsparken and Vestamager. The lines were later extended to Vanløse in one end and M2 was extended from Lergravsparken to the Copenhagen airport.

Metro Service has been operating the lines since the beginning in 2002. Everything is managed from our control room located at our control and maintenance centre - also called a CMC - on Metrovej 3 in between Ørestad and Vestamager metro stations.

We also maintain the trains in our workshops at CMC, our stewards come here to get dressed and check in and a large number of administrative employees go to work at Metrovej 3 every day.

M3/M4 lines

M3 and M4 are the two newest metro lines in Copenhagen. The M3 - also known as Cityringen - opened in 2019 and connected all central neighbourhoods and the inner city. Since then, the M4 extension to Orientkaj in Nordhavn opened in 2020 - and in 2024, the M4 was further extended to Copenhagen South.

Metro Service has been the operator of the lines since the start in 2019. Everything is controlled from our control room at our Control and Maintenance Centre - also known as CMC - on Vasbygade in Copenhagen Sydhavn.

A lot is going on at the CMC – we maintain the trains in the workshop, our skilled stewards come here to start their day and a large number of administrative employees work from the offices at Vasbygade 16.
